Description

Mānawatia a Matariki mā Puanga with Te Hapori Ora

“He wā whakawhiti, he wā whakamaumahara, he wā whakanui.”

Join Te Hapori Ora in celebrating the Māori New Year with a powerful Hautapu Ceremony that honours both Matariki and Puanga—two stars that light the path for iwi across Aotearoa.

While Matariki is widely known and celebrated, Puanga (Rigel) also holds special significance for Ngāti Tūwharetoa, heralding the shift in seasons and calling us into a space of remembrance, renewal, and reconnection.

What to Expect:

  • Cultural Rites & Rituals: Offerings of shared kai, and collective karakia (NB: Breakfast at 8:30AM included after the ceremony).
  • Kōrero & Maramataka Insights: Learn about Puanga, Matariki, and the Tūwharetoa maramataka
  • Waiata & Whakangahau: Music and movement to uplift the spirit
  • Whānau-Friendly Vibes: A safe and inclusive space for all ages to reflect, connect, and celebrate.

"Matariki and Puanga are for everyone. They remind us to look up, remember who we are, and step forward together." – Te Hapori Ora

This year's theme, Matariki mā Puanga, embraces the diverse stars, tikanga, and stories that guide iwi in marking the Māori New Year. Whether you follow Puanga or Matariki, this is a time to honour our past, celebrate our present, and plant intentions for the future.
